Chapter 16: The Aftermath of War
The cannons had fallen silent. The thunderous roar of muskets, the clash of steel, and the smoke of battle had dissipated, replaced by an eerie stillness, the kind that only comes after a storm. The American Revolution, with all its grand declarations and moments of heroism, had come to its end, culminating in the decisive surrender at Yorktown. Yet, for many of those who had carried the weight of the revolution on their shouldersâthe soldiers who had trudged through mud and snow, who had fought and bled for the dream of libertyâthe war was far from over. In the streets of a nation newly born, the soldiers of the revolution returned not to fanfare and parades, but to the cold reality of a world that had forgotten them.
They had fought for freedom, but for many, that freedom remained as elusive as ever. The ideals of liberty, equality, and justice, which had been proclaimed from the steps of independence halls and inked onto declarations, did not extend to the veterans who had risked everything to make those ideals a reality. For them, the aftermath of war was not a time of celebration but of disillusionment, as they confronted the stark truth that the nation they had helped create was unpreparedâand perhaps even unwillingâto support those who had sacrificed the most.
Among these veterans was Joseph Plumb Martin, whose life, though emblematic of the common soldier, reveals the profound disconnect between the lofty ideals of the revolution and the harsh realities faced by those who fought it. Martin had enlisted in the Continental Army at the tender age of 15, swept up in the fervor and idealism of the revolutionary cause. Like so many young men of his time, he had been drawn to the promise of liberty, to the idea of a land free from tyranny. But the war was long, gruelling, and unforgiving, and by its end, Martin had experienced the full measure of what it meant to be a soldier: hunger, cold, fatigue, and fear, tempered only by the camaraderie of his fellow soldiers and the hope of victory.
When the war finally ended, Martin, like so many others, returned home, expecting that the country he had fought to liberate would honour its debtsâmoral and materialâto its veterans. Instead, he found himself struggling to survive in a nation that had been economically devastated by the war, a nation with empty coffers and leaders who, while grateful for the sacrifices of their soldiers, had neither the resources nor the will to properly compensate them. For Martin, this was a bitter reality to confront: âWe had fought for liberty, but were we free?â he would later write in his memoirs, his words echoing the disillusionment that gripped so many of his fellow veterans.
The Continental Army, which had been hastily assembled and poorly supplied from the beginning, had fought much of the war under conditions of extreme privation. Soldiers often went months without pay, and when they were paid, it was frequently in worthless paper money that had little purchasing power.
